If you arrive by plane, you will probably arrive at one of the airports of Iraklion or Hania.
Iraklio international airport Nikos Kazantzakis is the biggest airport in Crete, located 84 km east of Rethymno and 5 km east of the center of Iraklio. Public bus Nr. 1 opposite the exit of the airport's building, leaves every 15-20 min, to the center of Iraklio. One ticket costs 0,90 euro and can be bought from the kiosk outside the bus, or from the driver. The ride to the bus station is about 10-15 minutes. Buses to Rethymno run every hour. The ticket costs 7,60 euro and it takes 90 minutes to arrive to Rethymno by bus. A taxi from the airport to Iraklion bus station should cost about 7 euro and would be a 10 minute ride. A taxifrom the airport to Rethymno directly, about 90 euro and an one hour ride. Many car rental companies have offices in the airport.
Hania international airport Ioannis Daskalogiannis, at Akrotiri peninsula, is 72 km north west of Rethymno and 14 km northeast of the center of Hania. By bus, the ride to Hania bus station is about 20 minutes. Buses to Rethymno run every hour. The ticket costs 6,20 euro and it takes 60 minutes to arrive to Rethymno by bus. A taxi from the airport to Hania bus station should cost 20 euro and it would take 20 minutes to get to Hania. To Rethymno directly, about 80 euro and an one hour ride. Many car rental companies have offices in the airport.
